Smile Design: What It Actually Involves From First Consultation to Final Result

September 29, 2026

A smile transformation video makes the process look simple: one clip shows stained, chipped, or misaligned teeth, and the next shows a completely different smile. What those videos rarely show is everything that happens in between, including the planning, the material choices, and the price tag most people are curious about but hesitant to ask. If you are in your twenties and researching cosmetic dentistry for the first time, the real question usually is not whether a new smile is possible. It is what the actual steps look like, how long they take, and how you are supposed to pay for them.

At LALUME Dental Studio, we built our smile design process around this exact concern. Every case begins with a real conversation about your goals, your budget, and your timeline, long before any tooth is touched. Below is what the process looks like from your first visit through your final result, including how pricing and financing typically work.

The First Consultation: Photos, Scans, and a Real Conversation

Your first visit is not a quick look in your mouth followed by a treatment recommendation. We take detailed photos of your face and smile, along with digital scans instead of old-style putty molds, and map how your teeth relate to your lips, gums, and facial proportions. This facially driven approach helps Dr. Saad and our team see your smile the way other people actually see it, not just as a set of individual teeth.

We also walk through your goals in plain language, including what you like about your current smile, what bothers you, and what result you are hoping for. Using digital planning technology, we can show you a preview of potential results before any treatment begins, so you have a clear picture of the plan you are agreeing to and can ask questions before committing to anything. If your bite or alignment needs attention first, we will talk through whether Invisalign should happen before your veneers, because a healthy bite gives your final result a better foundation.

Building a Treatment Plan That Fits Your Teeth

Not every case calls for the same type of veneer, and you do not simply pick one off a menu. Dr. Saad’s goal is always to preserve as much of your natural tooth as possible while still reaching your smile goals, which means some patients are good candidates for no-prep veneers, others need traditional porcelain veneers with minimal polishing of the enamel.

It helps to know upfront that veneer treatment, whichever type you choose, is not reversible once your teeth are prepared for it. The American Dental Association’s MouthHealthy resource notes that veneer treatment cannot be undone because enamel is altered to place the veneer, which is exactly why the planning and consultation stages matter so much before anything is finalized. Porcelain veneers at our studio typically last more than 15 years with proper care, and no-prep veneers last just as long, though they usually cost more due to a more technique-sensitive fabrication process.

The Real Cost of a Smile Design Case and How to Pay for It

Cost is usually the part people want clarity on before they book anything, so we like to be direct about it. Porcelain veneers, including no-prep porcelain veneers, typically range from $2,250 to $2,500 per tooth, and pricing is always broken down by tooth so you know exactly what you are agreeing to before treatment starts. We accept most PPO insurance plans for general care, but veneers are considered a cosmetic procedure and are not covered by dental insurance, regardless of which plan you carry.

A few options exist to help make treatment more manageable:

  • Financing through Cherry or CareCredit, including 0 percent options for up to 12 months and other payment plans available for up to 24 months
  • Our in-house membership plan, starting at $59 a month paid annually, with 10 percent off specialty services like implants, crowns, and Invisalign
  • A payment plan built around your specific treatment, discussed openly through our financing options at your consultation so nothing is a surprise later

We can walk through which combination fits your budget best once we know your treatment plan, and there is never any pressure to decide on the spot.
